"Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?..."

In this little town, I have seen trees made of wire with sentences hanging from their branches, a poem that talks about daring and fainting on an emergency exit, an excerpt from  “A Hundred Years of Solitude” on a notice-like poster, chapter 7 of a novel written in chalk on the way upstairs, a song by Leonard Cohen on the wall. World Book Day deserved those types of manifestations.

How have you celebrated World Book Day? What excerpt of what book would you read to others?

  1. One of my favourites moments with a book was reading “Para Cuerpos Inestables” by Joaquín Ríos. He is a good friend and a fabulous writer. It´s been the only time I´ve seen a person I know reflected on a poem. Nothing compares to it.
Another shocking experience was reading the first chapter of “Mañana En La Batalla Piensa En Mí”. Mainly because of the situation described, and maybe because of the film that appears. I used to like Javier Marías, although I don´t know if I would be able to read something written by him again.
I also remember “El Principito”, living alone in his tiny planet. Sad and scary, at least for the child I was when I read it.
I enjoy Monterroso´s tales, especially those related to mithology. Here you have an example:

Finally. I want to thank you, Elena, for your Poet´s Corner. I wouldn´t imagine myself reading English poetry one year ago.

  2. There are so many excerpts or poems I would read to others. It all depends on the time of the day and the day itself, sometimes even on the season, and also on the audience. Today, and for an anonymous or unknown audience, I would read ‘Palabras para Julia’ http://www.poesi.as/jag0020b.htm, or any poem by e.e. cummings or Sandra Cisneros. But it would have to be poetry. I just wish I had more time to read and more time to post more poems on this blog. Thanks.

  3. It so happens that "Palabras para Julia" is one of my favourite poems. I relish listening to Paco Ibáñez again and again singing this poem and I must confess that sometimes depending on my state of mind I burst out crying. I discovered it when I was young. Thanks to you for bringing me back some memories.
