Language and Power

This was in today's newspaper: http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2011/apr/14/david-cameron-immigrants-learn-english To what extent should language become a barrier?

  1. Yes, not to know a language where you are living is a problem that it can become a barrier.

The language is the way that humans have to communicate feelings, needs or whatever. And if you aren't able to express these aspects you will have found a barrier between you and the others.

  2. Cameron talks about lots of topics related to immigration. I´m going to focus on the language problem. And I partly agree with him. It is important for people who are going to live in another country learning its language. It would be helpful and make their life easier. However, is Cameron trying to help immigrants? Will he offer them grants to learn the language? I don´t think so. It sounds like a way of getting rid of part of them.

Does Mamacita have to learn English to stay in Mango Street? It will help her.
